About Burgenland

Burgenland is Austria’s newest and easternmost state, created after the Treaty of Trianon transferred this part of western Hungary to Austria in 1920. The region’s geography is defined by the western edge of the Pannonian Plain, featuring low, gently hilly terrain rather than alpine peaks. These hills support extensive vineyards and orchards, particularly in the southern districts. Eisenstadt, the capital, anchors the state administratively, while Mattersburg District is one of its seven districts with a population of around 40,000. Burgenland’s climate is warmer and drier in summer compared to alpine Austria, reflecting its continental setting. Vienna International Airport, just west of the border, serves as the main gateway for visitors, with Vienna itself concentrating a significant portion of Austria’s population and economic activity.
